  • How much does a private investigator cost?
The cost of a private investigator ranges vastly on the service that is being requested. You can generally find an investigator for $75 - $150 per hour, based on experience. Some cases may be less, and some specialty cases may cost more, depending on the scope.
  • Is it worth hiring a private investigator?
This question is based on your current situation, need for the truth, and personal finances. It's important to consider all these factors before hiring a private investigator. It never hurts to call and talk to one of our team members about your concerns and some options to help best resolve them.

  • Can you hack into or track someone's phone?
This is where some of that entertainment magic comes into play. Private investigators are not legally allowed to hack into things or track someone's phone. White hat hackers can be employed with the express consent of the owners of the data being hacked to assist in finding ways to protect data in a process called penetration testing. You would want to contact a cybersecurity company about this if you were interested in that kind of service. As private investigators, we can assist the owner of a computer or phone in checking it for unauthorized surveillance equipment (i.e, trackers like Life 360 that were installed without your permission) or in assisting in finding hidden data on your computer using computer forensics. We can also help in physical penetration testing, ensuring your home or business is secured against in-person threats.
  • Why hire a private investigator?
The main reason to hire a private investigator is to find the truth. Rather you are looking to find out if your relationship has infidelity, what your spouse is doing when they leave the house, or if you are in court and need to find evidence to assist with your case, there are a multitude of reasons to hire a private investigator. We are only a phone call away if you need solid evidence or just want to know the answer.
  • What should I look for when hiring a private investigator?
There is a few things you want to look for when hiring an investigator: 1. You want to make sure they are licensed and insured. 2. You want to know what kind of experience they have and if they have any specialty. 3. You want to know that they are going to be ethical and that they know the laws for your state. A private investigator IS NOT AN ATTORNEY (we can't stress this enough), but they do have to know the laws to best protect you, themselves, and the evidence they collect. 4. Know the cost of the service that you're looking into. A good investigator may not be able to give you an exact number. But a price per hour and/or a general estimate should be available. 5. To go with the cost of services, you want to ask if there are any payment options. Many investigators may not offer this but it helps to ask if you need it. 6. You will want to make sure how they plan to ensure privacy and confidentiality. A private investigator needs to be able to keep a secret!
  • Are private investigators legal in WA?
Yes. In Washington State, private investigators are legal—but only if they hold an active state-issued license. Licensed investigators are required to carry proof of licensure at all times while performing investigative work. It’s important to note that not everyone who claims to be an "investigator" is legally recognized as one. For example, paranormal investigators or hobbyists may refer to themselves using the title, but unless they are either licensed by the state or working directly for law enforcement, they are not legally authorized to perform investigative services. Always verify credentials if someone claims to be a private investigator.
  • Can anyone hire a private investigator?
Yes, anyone from individuals to businesses can hire a private investigator.
  • What are some private investigator limitations?
Private investigators are often expected to perform as they are portrayed on TV. Unfortunately, a private investigator has strict limitations when fulfilling their duties. They are bound by the state's laws as strictly as any civilian. That is why an essential skill of a private investigator is to be resourceful and think quickly on their feet. Here is a list of some, but not all, limitations of a private investigator. 1. A PI can not trespass or break into places. 2. A PI MUST respect someone's reasonable expectation of privacy (i.e, we can't take a photo of a subject inside someone's home). 3. In WA state, we cannot audio record without the express permission of all those involved. This includes placing bugs in your home. This does change in other states. 4. We cannot hack into people's phones or computers. 5. We cannot place tracking/GPS devices on someone's car to follow them. 6. We are not able to arrest someone. We can perform a citizen's arrest, just as any other citizen, and may carry handcuffs to assist in this. We also have strong connections to law enforcement and will contact them if needed. 7. We cannot falsify evidence. Unfortunately, for this line of work, this list is minimal compared to the complete list of things we cannot do. We will inform you of things we can not do based on your case and questions during intake if you choose to use our services. We assure you that despite the laws that restrict us, we are very resourceful in completing the job that needs to be done and, per our name, are very tenacious.
  • Can you provide a test to tell if my spouse is cheating?
We get asked this often; unfortunately, the answer is kind of. There is no 100% way to test someone for infidelity. But surveillance is an excellent place to start if you are looking to be discreet, and, of course, if you are looking to be more direct about the question, then a polygraph is an excellent option. Understand that trust is an integral part of a relationship. So, if you believe your spouse is cheating, we recommend being pretty sure before accusing someone. Talking to your spouse about your concerns is always a great first step. But we are always here for you if you need us.
  • Can't I just use those online background check services?
Yes, and we encourage it if you want a quick check on someone you're talking to. But these sources just compile already publicly available information from online. They are a wonderful source, but private investigators have more detailed, accurate, and comprehensive tools, data sources, and skills. Some of our resources are only available to people who hold specific licenses. We can go deeper into information, and not only is the information we provide more accurate, but also more up-to-date! If money is tight and you are just looking for a quick, somewhat informative answer, then check out many of the services online. But if you are serious about the information you need to collect, it's essential to be up-to-date and accurate. Give us a call.
  • I have a question that is not listed here?
We can't cover everything on one page. So if you have questions, please reach out to us. We are always happy to help.
  • What makes KB Tenacious, LLC different?
We often hear the question, "What sets you apart?" It's a question that deserves a thoughtful response because our approach to process serving is unique. Many other companies can provide similar years of experience. However, what sets us apart is our commitment to the service process. We share your desire to see the person served, although our motivations may differ slightly. Our common goal is clear: we aim to ensure that the defendant understands their rights under the 14th Amendment. We want them to willingly accept the legal documents, allowing due process to unfold and your case to move forward seamlessly. When we miss defendants at their residences, we take proactive steps. We provide them with an informative door tag that explains their rights and emphasizes the importance of accepting legal documents. Our commitment to efficiency is unrestricted. Need the order posted? Consider it done. Is the defendant only available at a specific time, say 3:52 PM on the following Saturday? Let us handle that. We can't guarantee service will be successful, but we promise to do everything possible to help you. As a small business, we rely on you, our customer, just as much as you depend on us.
  • What if the defendant is avoiding service?
This situation unfortunately occurs quite frequently. Some defendants may not fully understand their rights or be reluctant to accept legal documents, believing it will hinder your case. However, rest assured we have strategies in place to address this challenge. We specialize in various forms of alternative service. For instance, if you can provide a photo, we can employ a method known as "Drop Service," where we leave the documents at the defendant's location when they've been spotted, and there are no physical barriers between the server and the defendant. Alternatively, we can affix the documents to the door of their residence or send them via certified mail. While we are here to assist, we strongly recommend that if you're not an attorney, you consider consulting one for guidance on the most suitable and legally approved forms of alternative service tailored to your specific case. Your peace of mind is essential to us. We are not able to recommend what service will be accepted for your case.
  • Do you handle high-risk services?
High-risk service refers to situations where the plaintiff or others believe the defendant may react with hostility or aggression when being served. This is common in cases involving unlawful detainers, restraining orders, or emotionally charged disputes—but can occur in any legal matter. We are equipped to handle these scenarios with care. Our process servers are trained to recognize the limits of their role. If a server feels that a situation may escalate, they will disengage and return the documents to our office. From there, a licensed private investigator—trained in de-escalation techniques and high-risk encounters—will take over. If a situation becomes too dangerous to proceed safely, you will be notified, refunded, and referred to the appropriate local law enforcement agency for service. We ask all clients to be transparent about any known risks or concerns with a defendant’s behavior. The safety of our team is our top priority.
  • Can your process server dress up as the pizza guy?
Our process servers have to be transparent about their intentions. Generally, our servers start the conversation as they have a delivery, package, or documents for the defendant. When asked what they are, the process server must say they are legal documents. For privacy reasons, they do not share any details about the papers and their contents other than that they are legal papers.
  • Can you photograph or video the defendant?
No, we have to respect an individual's reasonable expectation of privacy. As we serve at someone's front door most of the time, we have a general policy that we should not take photos of the defendant. We do take a photo of the address to assist in transparency, showing we are at the address, and we take pictures of the license plates of cars to assist in proving residency. As for video, there are specific laws in WA State that prevent audio recordings, and for non-audio, we still must respect the individual's reasonable expectation of privacy.
  • Can you have the defendant sign the affidavit?
Unfortunately, process servers do not collect signatures. Our investigators can try to get a signature if you would like, but we can not force someone or coerce them in any way to do so.
  • The address that I had is no longer valid. What are my next steps?
We generally can assist you in getting a new address. We do skip tracing! However, an attorney must request these services.
  • How many times will you attempt?
We will attempt up to 5 times for your order or until due diligence is complete, Every 48 to 72 hours on standard services. For us, due diligence means attempting throughout the day randomly, focusing primarily on times the defendant will likely be home. We make detailed reports, including if we hear voices, what cars are on-site, and any evidence that the building may be abandoned. We attempt weekdays and weekends until either all attempts have been exhausted, your service documents have expired, there is reason to believe that the defendant does not reside at the location, the server is not able to make attempts due to a physical barrier (like a locked gate), or the area is too hostile for process servers (including our high-risk team) to attempt.
  • How do you charge?
We charge per address, defendant being served, per case, and per proof needed. We do require prepayment before service begins. For example, one defendant under one case with one proof would be one charge. If two people lived at the address, it would be two charges as two proofs would be needed. We do not double charge on marital community cases.
  • Do you offer discounts?
We do if you have a large expected number of monthly orders or a sudden high number of cases. Call us for more information; we would be happy to assist.
  • What is your refund policy?
If we have not attempted, a full refund can be offered. If attempts have been made, then partial to full refunds can be made on a case-by-case basis. If you feel a refund is needed, please reach out. Automatic full refunds take place if: 1. A refund is requested before service attempts. 2. The location has been found too hostile to attempt. 3. The server is unable, by fault of the server or KB Tenacious, LLC, to complete your order even if attempts have been started. This does not count if the server can not obtain access to the location due to a physical barrier. Please note that although we will process your refund immediately, it can generally take 3-5 business days to show in your account. This is based on your bank and is out of our control. If you have questions, we recommend contacting your bank first and then reaching out to us if it cannot be resolved.
  • When do I pay?
Our orders generally require prepayment. If you work for a company that needs other accommodations, please reach out, and we can work out other payment methods.
  • What times are your servers available?
Our servers can serve between 8 AM and 9 PM PST, Mon-Sun. This is different from our regular business hours. We serve during these times as part of our company policy. Accommodations can be made to meet a defendant outside of these times if needed, but the request for outside of these times, we ask comes from the defendant directly. We only ask this as we would not want to have the wrong address and be disturbing someone at an unreasonable time.
  • What kind of alternative services do you offer?
Our servers can do alternative services like sub-service, drop service, and posting. If you have a specific method for your case, please leave notes when placing the order, and our servers will accommodate it to the best of our abilities. PHOTOS are ALWAYS helpful. Please note we are not an attorney and can not advise you on what services your case will accept. We can only perform services based on what we know of current WA state laws. Always double-check with a legal professional before requesting an alternative form of service.
  • What if my question is not listed here?
If you have any questions at all and want more information, please reach out to us. Our team is always happy to help as much as we can! We love emails as they allow us to provide you with a well-written response to your question. But calls are always welcome!
